My Breastfeeding Badges of Honor

A few new Twitter-isms

I *love* Simply Lemonade. It's actually sour and has pulp - yum. Well, Elliott Richard asked for some today so I shared. After he had finished his lemonade he had this to tell me:

Elliott Richard: Mommy, I really like your's lemonade.
Me: I'm glad baby.
ER: Yup, it's good fuzzy lemonade.
(Apparently, pulp is fuzzy. lol)

Then Trisha and I were sitting and watching television and she asked Elliott Richard for a diaper because his was "soggy". I gave her a diaper. Elliott Richard jumps off the couch, takes off the soggy diaper, leaves it on the floor, runs into Rob's office and pees on the floor. At this point Trisha told him that tomorrow she will take him to the store and buy him big boy undies. She even offered to buy him boxer shorts if he wanted. At this point he decided he wanted "boxers shorts". We've now learned that "boxers shorts" aren't actually boxer shorts. To Elliott Richard they are boxES of shorts.

A Little Bit of Elliott Richard Randomness

8:27:00 PM Posted In , , , , , , Edit This 2 Comments »

Just a silly little 3 year old boy with his shirt stuck on his head. It's a little blurry because he was giggling so hard he couldn't sit still for the picture. :)

Elliott Richard with my cousin, Olivia's puppy (she's full grown dog by now) Lilah. It was actually seeing him with Lilah that sparked the idea of "maybe we should get a dog" in me.

Daddy with his Spidey. He wore that suit for about 2.5 seconds just long enough to snap a picture before he took it off. :)

Daddy and Elliott Richard

Yes, Elliott Richard is laying on Rob's head. Although I'm *pretty sure* he wasn't asleep at the time...just being a silly kid. :)

This is Elliott Richard's first ride in one of those rides at the mall. He's always been fascinated by them but everytime we've offered a ride he's played it cool and walked off. So blurry or not I had to catch a picture of him on this one...in case he never rides again. lol

A Quick Word About All the Pictures

11:00:00 AM Edit This 2 Comments »
I haven't posted pictures in a long time so I wanted to post a few - ok more than a few. Most of my pictures these days are taken with my 2 megapixel camera on my cellphone, which makes it easier to post pictures to the blog although I have to give up a little in picture quality. Also I can't post comments to go above or below each picture when I post them this way. So for now, enjoy the pictures until I can snag my laptop to add comments. :)

Future Sado-Masochistic Torture Specialist?

10:20:00 AM Posted In , , , , , , Edit This 4 Comments »
Okay so I've made reference to Emmett John's future as a Torture Specialist in the Military. It would now appear that he wishes to branch out. Apparently, Mr. Emmett John feels that job is too narrow in it's description and he is seeking to pad his resume a bit. You see Emmett John has 4 teeth, nay razor blades, 2 top and 2 bottom making a nice little razor blade vice grip. Now I've nursed two babies before Emmett John. Both of them had teeth of their very own while nursing. Both of them bit me exactly once, apiece. Period. It went something like this:

....nursing....
*BITE*
I SCREAM!
Gavin and/or Elliott Richard jump and begin to cry but never bite me again.

With Emmett John it's a little different. It goes something like this:

....nursing....
*BITE & CLAMP*
I SCREAM & BURST into TEARS!
Emmett John grins and giggles while refusing to release my nipple from his razor blade vice.

So it appears to me that my precious little miracle baby is a sado-masochistic torture specialist in training. He's even injured me and I can't figure out how to make it stop. I think I'm going to have to wean him long before originally planned but what more can I do?

Oh, where are my injuries you ask? Well, I'll leave you with this photo from NBC's "The Office" (one of my absolute favorite shows) and allow you to use your imaginations from there...

Ouch

I hate needles. Okay, hate is a strong word but truly it isn't a strong enough word. Phobic is really a better word. Terrified. Horrified. And now I think I have a cavity, which as we all know is likely to require shots to numb me up. The dentist makes me nervous enough on its own but when you throw in the whole cavity, needles, drilling parts...ick ick ick. My brother-in-law John sees a dentist who uses sedation if necessary so I'll be calling her tomorrow.

Yippee?

Ok, so yet again I've been MIA. I'm trying to get into a groove to correct that. I swear. There has just been far too much drama going on for my tastes lately. But that's not why I'm blogging. I've come to share some adorable kid stories with you.

Danny, Dyvin & Payton

As of April 1st my big sister (long story that I'll share later) Trisha, her husband John and their 3 kids - Danny (almost 12 yrs.), Dyvin (8 yrs.) and Payton (5 yrs.) will be moving down the street. (If I get the okay to use full first names I will, until then you get these nicknames.) Well, Payton is absolutely head-over-heels in love with my Tiny Doodlebug (honestly who isn't) and was overheard telling Danny and Dyvin how Emmett John could spend the night once they were all moved. Here's how the conversation went:

Payton: Mommy can buy Emmett John his own bed and put it in my room at the new house so he can spend the night.
Danny: Sorry Fudge but Emmett John can't spend the night.
P: Why not?!
D: Well, Emmett John is only 9 months old and Mommy never let any of us spend the night away from home when we were that little.
P: But Mommy talks to Aunt Lizzie all the time! And we live 3 doors down!
D: Emmett John would get hungry.
P: (getting frustrated with Jr's ignorance) Mommy would make him bottles.
D: Emmett John doesn't drink bottles.
P: So we will buy him baby food.
D: Emmett John needs more than baby food, Fudge.
P: What does he eat then?
(Dyvin has been listening all this time.)
Dyvin: What?! Ew! Gross!
P: What D?! What's gross?
D: (sighs)
Dyvin: (disgusted) Fudge, Emmett John eats Aunt Lizzie's boobies!
P: (horrified) What?! I had a bottle. (more of a plea than a statement) Why would Aunt Lizzie do that?!
D: Some mommies feed their babies that way because it's better. Mommy fed me that way.
(enter my sister)
Trisha: Yes, Fudge, you drank a bottle. And so did you D. We don't call them boobies. Aunt Lizzie calls them nummies when she's referring to Emmett John. (She proceeds to explain nursing and whatnot to P and D.)

I just about died when she told me this story. Of course, now with them all living 3 doors down I expect to have many more stories like this one to share. :)

Be the change you wish to see in the world

Long time no see...

11:12:00 AM Posted In , , , , , , Edit This 2 Comments »
Ok so my darling Nikky informed me last week via Twitter (I *heart* Twitter!) that it has been roughly 3 weeks since my last post. Yikes! Where has the time gone? Oh, yeah, that's right...life. So as I sit here waiting on about a dozen return phone calls I'm going to try and post the shortest, most informative update I can.

Gavin

Dr. R has placed Gavin on the dreaded Depakote. It is what we call our "Hail Mary" play. We had put it off because it requires pretty frequent blood draws, however, the time has come to bite the bullet. He started out on 250mg BID and then after 5 days my sister and I took him to have his levels checked. That was an experience let me tell you and a post all on it's own. Now he is on 375mg BID. Poor kid is exhausted out of his mind but he flat out refuses to sleep because he's afraid he'll sleep the day away. Overall, he's doing okay I suppose. Well, not really. He's aggressive and violent, distracted and rude. In the past few weeks he's punched, kicked and smacked Elliott Richard across the back with a toy. His imaginary boss is back. He doesn't sleep and stays up all night for days at a time writing songs, writing stories, drawing these intricate plans for things that only make sense to him. Rob and I can see him slipping away again and it kills us.

Elliott Richard

My Tiny Little Twitterbug will be 3 years old this Wednesday. :'( I'm so not ready for this. He's getting so big though, it's just crazy. He still has no interest in potty training. Physically and emotionally he's ready. He still seems to have a mental block about the whole thing though. So we don't push it. I've got a ton of new "Twitterisms" to post. I swear he learns something new to say everyday. He's super excited about his birthday party this weekend. Of course he's been talking about it since Gavin's party in January. lol His 3 year checkup is next week so I'll have more to post about him then.

Emmett John

Mr. Emmett John is now 8 months old, 7 months adjusted. He's been able to roll over from his back to his tummy for months but really didn't seem to see the need. Now that he can get from his tummy to his back, it's a whole different ballgame. Back to tummy. Tummy to back. Back and forth. Over and over and over again. :) lol He's babbling with "ba-ba-ba" now as well. He's also starting giving what Rob and I call "kisses", which is basically just Emmett John attacking your jawline with his one tooth. lol Yes, that's right....he has his first tooth and is working tirelessly on his second!

And speaking of Emmett John he's hungry (still nursing on demand) and tired so I'll have to leave this long overdue update here. I'll try and be back later to update on me, Rob, life with a big sister, Maggie and everything else.

Stay tuned!

The Party to End All Parties

10:31:00 AM Posted In , , , , , , , , , , , Edit This 1 Comment »
Literally.

Saturday, January 24th at 4:00pm we all gathered together to celebrate the life of my beautiful, special little man. In hindsight, perhaps this was not the best idea.

So despite my best efforts to prepare and be ready long before the day of the party arrived, Saturday was a crazy day. I had tried to get the cleaning done and the shopping done long before the party. Yeah, that didn't happen. So of course while we are all running around like chickens with our heads cut off, Rob bent down and picked up an empty duffel bag. He didn't move in a funky way. It wasn't heavy. But that's all it took and his back was G-O-N-E...gone!

There I was with a house to clean, shopping to do, children to care for, and a party to set-up and my partner in crime was down for the count. (Oy!) I admit it, I was freaking out. Luckily, I had already called Mom G. and begged her to come and help. I was waiting for her to call me so I could pick her up. Even with Rob's Mom coming, I was still freaking out and feeling the day spinning wildly out of control. Enter "Super Sister"! (duh tu da da) I called my big sister, Trisha, near tears because I had no idea how I was going to get everything done. True to form, Trisha saved the day. She was everything a big sister should be, in my opinion.

Mom G. called me at about 10am to say that she was ready. Mr. Emmett John and I went to pick her up. Then while we were out I did my running around. We hit the Dollar Store for cups, silverware, napkins, table cloth and some other odds and ends that weren't really on my list but I bought them anyway. :D (lol) Then we hit Giant Eagle so I could pickup the ice cream and pop. I completely forgot the chips and candy that I had also intended to pick up. Eh well. We swung through McDonald's for 2 ice teas and then headed home.

All of that build up, now for the party. ;)

The party was scheduled to start at 4pm. Trisha arrived at 12noon, shortly after Mom G. and I returned from our running around. And by running around, I mean Mom G. was kind enough to hang out in the car with a sleeping Emmett John. We ate lunch and then tackled the house. Mom G. took on the dishes, which then morphed into her cleaning the kitchen. Trisha and I tackled the laundry that needed folding and the bathroom. She was also kind enough to get Elliott Richard dressed, which is no easy feat. He made her offer every single shirt he owns. Only to choose the shirt she offered him first in the end. (lol) Between Mom G., Trisha and myself we managed to knock out the cleaning, shopping and general party-prep by 3pm! :) (Woo who!)

People started to arrive around 4pm, right on time. (I love punctuality.) All told, the guest list was pretty long. :) We had:

Grammy (Great Grandma C.)
Great-Aunt Sharon
Aunt Trisha
Grandma G.
Pa-Pa G.
Grandma W.
Grandpa W.
Uncle Brian
Uncle Jon
Aunt Teri
Aunt Kate
Uncle Tim
Jenna (Uncle Tim's girlfriend)
Aunt Jenny
Matt (Aunt Jenny's boyfriend)
Michelle ("Mo-Mo", our neighbor)

The party itself was a huge success! We had pop and cake and ice cream. I had baked some cupcakes. My parents picked up a 1/4 sheet cake from Giant Eagle. We talked, laughed and mingled. Gavin bounced off the walls until it was time for cake and ice cream. We sang "Happy Birthday" to him and he blew out his candles. Then Elliott Richard got ready to blow out his candle (my method for keeping him from blowing out Gavin's candles) but he refused to blow it out without us singing "Happy Birthday" to him. (lol) While we mingled and ate cake, Gavin continued to bounce off the walls. (Perhaps this should have been a clue as to what lie ahead.) Before long my Grammy and Aunt Sharon said they needed to get going, plus Gavin was getting more and more hyper as time went on so we opted to move right along to the presents.

Let me just say this, he made out like a bandit! And boy can my boy open gifts! Michelle commented on the fact that she's never seen a kid open gifts that fast before. (lol)

He was thrilled beyond words with his new Kinex Ferris wheel. After he had torn the wrapping off all the gifts, he grabbed the box and made a bee-line for his room. Throughout the night Brian went upstairs and helped Gavin put it all together and get it sorted out. Thank God for Brian! Rob and I are horrible with complicated sets like that. While I'm confident that Gavin would have eventually had the whole thing built, it happened just that much faster with Brian's help. :)

People slowly trickled out after Gavin opened his gifts. In the end, it was Rob, me, Trisha, Jenn, and Matt. Elliott Richard went to bed between 8 and 9pm. We let Gavin stay up until 10-ish since it was his birthday party and all. At around 9:30pm the adults decided we were starving and we ordered Pizza Hut. (My first Pizza Hut pizza in about 6 months! That's another post that's coming.) It was a really awesome way to end the evening. Sitting around and eating pizza with some of my favorite people in the world. Overall, it was a good day.

That was then. Sunday was a whole different story.

At the time when I planned the party, I wanted to celebrate Gavin. I wanted to make his birthday big and bright and special. I wanted him to be able to look around and see just how much we all love him. In that respect, I accomplished my goal. What I failed to take into account were the side effects. I failed to think past Saturday into Sunday and the next week. That was my fault.

We spent Sunday and the week following trying to...adjust. Sunday night we couldn't get Gavin to give up on his Ferris wheel and go to bed. The insanity that ensued over the next week...I can't really find words to describe it. It wasn't any single behavior. It was more a general feeling running through the household, controlled by Gavin. Much like the under-tow of the ocean is controlled by the moon and God. It's nothing that can be seen by an outsider. However, it is certainly something that can be felt by the swimmers in the ocean.

Because of this feeling, this current, Rob and I have made the decision that this year's birthday party was quite honestly the party to end all parties, at least as far as Gavin is concerned. That's not to say that we won't celebrate his birthday every year, because we most certainly will. Nor will we prohibit others from celebrating. It will just have to be celebrated in little, tiny bursts either over the course of a week or possibly in a single day (scheduled in a fashion similar to doctor's appointments). Either way we won't attempt to overwhelm him with that many people again. Even when it comes to Elliott Richard and Emmett John's birthdays, we will likely make arrangements with my parents to leave early and take Gavin with them. That way we are not forced into avoiding birthday parties for them as well.

So the party itself was a smashing success, in my opinion. The aftermath, fallout and next 7 days...yeah, not so much. You live. You learn, I suppose.

My Big Sister ROCKS!

3:24:00 PM Posted In , Edit This 0 Comments »

That's right. My big sister ROCKS!

As you may remember, Dr. H has given the okay for me to try some milk products to see how Mr. Emmett John reacts. Yesterday while in the grocery store I decided to buy a sugar cookie with some serious icing thinking that surely it had milk in it somewhere. Wrong. Well, I ate the cookie anyway but I must admit I was a wee bit irritated. I was irritated because a) I love these cookies and could have been eating them for the past 6 months and b) I was all worked up to eat milk again and it was a no go.

So last night I was talking to my sister before she came over to hang out. (There's a shock, I know. lol) Anyway, we were chatting and I told her about my cookie snafu. Then when she calls me on her way over and tells me that she is stopping by Wendy's and picking up 3 Frosty Floats. So I was all excited. Then she shows up with double stuffed Oreos, peanut M&Ms, 2 containers of cheese cubes, Ben & Jerry's Phish food ice cream and Ben & Jerry's Peanut Butter Chocolate ice cream. All of that yummy junk food just so that I could have milk products for the first time in nearly 6 months. :) In the end I went with the Frosty Float and the Oreos but that's because there isn't any milk in the Oreos.

But how awesome is my sister? To bring all of those goodies that she knows I love. I'm a lucky girl, this I know.

I love you Trish! :p

9 years old and Growing Stronger Everyday

12:52:00 PM Posted In , , , , , , Edit This 1 Comment »
Tomorrow is Gavin Alexander's 9th birthday. I can't believe that 9 years have gone by already. Likewise, I can't believe all that we have survived and endured over the past 9 years. Wow.

If you follow me on Twitter, you may have read about Thursday's 9 year well-child check-up. If you don't, hold on tight because it was a bumpy ride!

First things first, the stats:

Height: 54.3in/4ft 5.3in (75%)
Weight: 63lb 2oz (51%)
BP: 80/62
Vision: 20/25

My darling bottomless pit has only gained 2oz in the past few months. Dr. H doesn't seem worried. In fact, he said he's very happy with Gavin's height and weight because he's consistantly gaining and growing. I guess, in the end, that's all that truly matters. Although between you and me, I wouldn't mind if some weight stuck to him because it's getting next to impossible to find pants that are both long enough and slim enough to fit him. (lol)

He hasn't really grown any either. I mean he's grown like 0.3in but that doesn't seem like much. As long as Dr. H is happy though, I'm good.

Gavin had taken his "Funfolio" with him to the appointment to help keep him distracted. (That think is amazing!) So while Rob and I talked to Dr. H, Gavin sat and drew pictures and played. We discussed the fact that Gavin was due for a chickenpox booster. Dr. H said that we could do a blood test to see if the booster was necessary but that would mean the possibility of having to bring Gavin back in at another time for the booster shot anyway. We opted out of that. Then we discussed the fact that Gavin has never had bloodwork. No liver panel. Or kidney functions. Or CBC. Or even a lead level. While none of us relished the fact that the bloodwork was obviously necessary, we did agree that it had to be done. Dr. H even schmoozed the Lab Ladies into sending a Lab Tech up to do the bloodwork while we had him held down for the booster shot. Apparently because of Gavin's PICA we need to do lead levels on him more frequently than usual to make sure that he isn't slowly poisoning himself. (Yippee.) After we talked and caught Dr. H up (this was his first time seeing Gavin for a well-child appointment), he did his exam. Everything was perfect.

Then we discussed the fact that Gavin has dextracardia. Dr. H seemed a little...excited by the fact that Gavin has dextrocardia. (lol) He said that he had learned about it in medical school but had never actually seen a case before so he wanted to do some research and get back to me about it. He said depending on what he learns in his research he may want to schedule some tests to see the extent of the dextrocardia's effect on Gavin. Dextrocardia is incredibly rare. The rarest form is when the heart is flipped and lies on the right side of the chest and nothing else is effected. There are other forms where all the organs in the body are flipped and on the opposite side, which is the most common form of dextrocardia. There can also be lung and other issues tied to the dextrocardia. So we are waiting to hear back from Dr. H about what he would like us to do on that.

After the exam and all of the grown-up talk, Dr. H left to see another patient while the nurses gathered and the Lab Tech made her way up to our room. The point of no return had arrived.

Dr. H had wanted to be in the room to help us during the shot and bloodwork but once Gavin figured out what was about to go down, well the anxiety was too much for him so we opted to get started without him. It took 2 nurses, 1 Lab Tech, Rob and myself to hold Gavin down for his booster shot. We opted to lay him on the exam table so that we could just transition from the shot to the bloodwork. When Rob picked Gavin up to lay him on the table Gavin flung his legs out trying to hook his feet under the exam table and a chair to keep us from laying him down. Let me tell you, he may look little but my boy is a scrapper! He fought hard! Luckily I had the presence of mind to tell Rob to leave Gavin's shoes off otherwise things would have been pretty painful on my end. Dr. H's nurse that always treats Emmett John, Christine, was the one giving the booster. God bless her. I've never seen anyone give a shot so quick in my life!

Not only is Gavin strong but he has a set of lungs on him! He screamed. He begged. He pleaded. It was horrible and heart-breaking for me as his mother (and Rob as his father) to hear him. He was desperate and begging us to stop it and "don't let them do this to me". At one point I could do little else besides hide in the corner and shake. Well, during all of the hullabaloo Dr. H was in the neighboring exam room and he began to BEAT on the wall. He hit it so hard you could see the wall shaking! It was crazy. Just after we got the booster in, while Gavin was catching his breath and before he had figured out the Lab Tech's role Dr. H came rushing into the room. He walked over to Gavin's side and began helped to hold him still. All the while telling Gavin, "It's okay buddy. I'm here. It's almost over but we have to do it." It was so nice to see how much he cared about my special little boy. Well, Gavin wasn't having any of it. He looked Dr. H in the eye and screamed as loudly as he could, "I.Don't.Like.You.Anymore!" Dr. H just took it in stride and told Gavin, "I know you don't but it has to be done buddy. I'm sorry." In the end, the Lab Tech took 6 vials of blood so that they could run all of the necessary tests. Gavin was hysterical during the whole thing. The Tech was awesome. Gavin has never had bloodwork done before, unless you count the bloodwork he had done 9 years ago in the hospital. I'm really curious what it will show.

Overall, the day was one of our more stressful with Gavin. At least more stressful and unrelated to court or Gavin's meltdowns for anger-based-reasons. I'm so glad to have it over and done with though. On the bright side, Gavin doesn't have to get any more shots - booster or otherwise - until he's like 15 years old. Woo who! In the end, he played the drama card for a little while after the appointment but he made a full recovery by Friday. Plus, as a bonus for...surviving...he got to spend the night at Grandma W's house! Then Grandpa W asked if he could spend Friday night there as well. Woo who! So Gavin got a cool reward for having survived the day. And Mommy and Daddy got some time to recover. (lol)

Ah, yes, the Story of Gavin. Definitely not your "fairy tale princess" story, that's for sure. But it's part of our story and it's the beginning of his story, nonetheless. So it must be told. Besides I know you're all simply dying to know where it all began with my ex. ;)

Mommy: Elliott Richard, I love you this much! {with my arms open wide enough to touch behind my back}
Elliott Richard: Mommy, I love you big!

{I overheard this conversation between Daddy and Elliott Richard during a diaper change the other day.}
Daddy: Elliott Richard, that is a gross and super stinky poop.
Elliott Richard: I see it!
Daddy: No, you don't need to see it.
Elliott Richard: Oh come on! It be fun!

Google It!

Okay, this week's "Google It" borders on the...shall we say...interesting side of things? ;) lol
  • can you health issues be discussed at work (Google) ~ I suppose it depends on the job, the health issue and who you are talking to. I talk about health issues at "work" all the time. Then again, I work at home. So yeah...
  • JOHN EMMETT BLOGSPOT (Google) ~ Hhhhhmmmm...there's a John Emmett and he has a blog. I must look into this.
  • "morellichaos" (Google) ~ Ah, yes. My dear friend Amanda.
  • eating cheerios butt naked on the front porch (Google) ~ Wow. I'm not sure what more to say to someone not only actually doing this but then searching for other naked cheerio eaters on the net. lol
  • greeting cards to my mommy and daddy (Google) ~ Once again, we have those. All three of those - the mommy, the daddy and the greeting cards. :)
  • trileptal side effect curly wavy hair (Google) ~ Yet another side effect of trileptal that I'd never heard of. ;)

The Return of Not Me Monday!

8:36:00 AM Posted In , Edit This 0 Comments »

This week, I definitely did not...

I did not chase Maggie Sue (my beloved puppy) through the snow and kick snow in her general direction because she chased the falling snowflakes.

I did not drop a handful of snow of Elliott Richard's head because I thought he would think it was funny. He did not then begin to scream hysterically because he thought it was anything but funny. And Daddy did not catch the whole thing on video, making me feel like a horrible mother.

I did not push myself way too hard to get things done because Gavin's 9th birthday is coming up.
I did not scream hysterically for no real reason because Rob convinced me there were mice living in our pull-out bed in the couch just before he pulled it out.

I did not declare war on the absolute rudest woman in "customer service" ever. I also did not do the "Dance of Joy" because I managed to get the CEO/rude woman's boss to call Rob, which will lead to her being reprimanded(at the very least).

I also did not make it my mission to try and get said lousy "customer service" rep fired. That would be mean and slightly irresponsible. Then after Rob talked to the CEO, I did not seriously consider calling him back in a few days to ask "Did you fire her?" Again, that would be mean.

I did not buy a wheat-free, dairy-free, gluten-free cake and icing mix to make the cupcakes for Gavin's 9th birthday party so that I could eat them. I have never had these mixes before and would not take that chance on Gavin's birthday just so that I can have some cake.

I am not finishing my "Not Me Monday" on Tuesday morning because I did not push myself too hard, thereby wearing myself out by 8:30pm last night.

The First Week of 2009

8:07:00 PM Posted In , , , Edit This 3 Comments »
As the first full week of 2009 slowly but surely comes to a close, I find myself praying that the next 51 weeks improve. lol

It's not that it's been a bad week perse. Just busy.

Monday was spent running around. Farmer's Market. Grocery store. All on a doughnut because our tire blew - thank you careless roofing guys. Tuesday was spent doing more running around. An appointment for me. An appointment for Gavin. Today was calmer, I suppose. Emmett John had his 6 month well-baby checkup at 12noon. We didn't get out of there until 2pm. Home at about 2:30pm. Then off to pick-up Gavin and home again. Then tomorrow I've got an appointment. Rob has an appointment. Then Gavin has 2 appointments. My plan for Friday is simple. Up. Gavin to school. Bloodwork done. Gavin home. Done.

On to the good stuff...Mr. Emmett John's 6 month well-baby checkup. :)

Weight: 19lb. 3oz.
Length: 28in.
Head circ: 44cm.
Vaccines: Rotovirus, Flu, DTaP, Prevnar

Dr. H and I talked about a lot of things. Emmett John has horrible excema on the backs of both his legs and a small patch between his eyebrows. He said the excema itself isn't a concern but the fact that as soon as you uncover Emmett John's legs his hands fly down there and he starts scratching like crazy. His legs look like he tried to kick a cat and lost, horribly. I've been trying to treat it with the Johnsons & Johnsons pink "new baby smell" lotion but it's only gotten us so far. Dr. H wants us to stop using all of the "baby friendly" J&J products because they have dyes and scents in them that make the excema worse. We have to switch him to Dove Sensitive Skin but not use it on his hair. (Dr. H said that with the peach fuzz Emmett John has a damp cloth should be good enough. lol) There is also a new lotion he wants us to use and if that doesn't help get rid of the rest of it then we are to switch to a 1% hydrocortisone cream. Hopefully it won't come to that.

We have been given the okay to switch to the "big boy" carseat. I will miss the convenience of the carrier but he's passed the length limit and rapidly closing in on the weight limit. My only concern with the switch is whether or not the new carseat will fit in the back of the car with Elliott Richard's carseat. I wish we had a van. :(

We also formulated a plan of attack for the milk-free diet and the Prevacid. When Emmett John is 8 months old I am allowed to try something with a tiny bit of milk in it. If Emmett John handles it okay, then I'm allowed to begin slowly re-introducing milk back into my diet. If he wakes up at 3am the morning after I eat it, then I have to go back to milk-free. Honestly, I'll be surprised if he handles it okay. You never know, I guess. Then at 9 months I am supposed to "skip" a dose of his Prevacid one morning. If he does okay without it then we are supposed to stop giving it to him. If he is a great big "bundle of fuss and grump" then he wants us to keep giving it to him.

Then of course he got his vaccines, which he was less than thrilled with. He handled them like a trooper though. I think he's angrier that his legs are held down than over the shots themselves. The nurse who gave him the shots is in love with him and seeks him out to say "Hi" everytime she sees him on the patient list. :) I just love her. (Wish I could remember her name but it escapes me at the moment. I plead sleep deprivation.) After she gave him his shots we had an interesting conversation about all the young, new moms coming in and refusing vaccines. But that's another post.

He's been doing really well today. Except for the fact that I decided in my infinite mommy wisdom to try Mr. Emmett John on green beans for the first time. About an hour or so after eating, he projectile vommitted all over me, himself and the couch. So now we are going to wait 4-5 days (per Dr. H) and try the green beans again. If he doesn't puke, then it's probably the combination of the vaccines and green beans that just didn't sit well. If he does puke, then at least green beans are loads easier to avoid then milk. :)

It's one of those days

2:35:00 PM Posted In , , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »

I'm exhausted. I took a crappy nappy with Emmett John this afternoon. It didn't help. I had hoped it would at least help with the raging sleep deprivation migraine I've got going on. No dice.

Then Elliott Richard and I were eating my organic Emmett John Friendly Oreo-type cookies. He had the cutest little mustashe and gotee going on. I just had to take pictures. So I grab the camera and crouch down to get on Elliott Richard's level. As I'm crouching a stabbing pain shoots through my right knee and then my knee gave out. I fell backwards. The camera went flying.

Now my knee is all screwed up, again. (It had just started to heal from me screwing it up the night we got Abby.) And the camera is broken. I can't believe I broke it 4 days before Mr. Emmett John's First Christmas! *sigh*

The following words and phrases have brought readers to my humble blog:

trileptal accidental dose (Ask Jeeves) ~ Wow. Trileptal questions are still bringing readers to the blog. I feel a little better that I'm not the only one who handed out an accidental dose though. :)

trileptal complexion (Google) ~ I didn't know there was such a thing as a "Trileptal complexion". Interesting....

brie cheese (Google) ~ Ah...cheese...I miss cheese.

i believe that faith has brought us here, so we can be together girl- cherrio commercial (Google) ~ Even misspelled searches for cheerio commercials bring readers to me. :D

greeting cards to mommy and daddy (Google) ~ We've got all three of those things: mommy, daddy and greeting cards. :)

m&m facts (Yahoo) ~ I am 99% sure that this person didn't find what they were looking for. My M&M's are sweet but they don't have anything to do with the candies. Sorry about the confusion.

My Child the Torture Specialist

9:02:00 AM Posted In , , , , , Edit This 0 Comments »

Mr. Emmett John has a future in the military. Interrogating terrorists. His specialty will be in the field of using sleep deprivation. I become more convinced of this as time goes on. I didn't realize how a kid could be a picky sleeper until Emmett John.

Because of his milk and soy allergies, if I have ANY milk or soy Emmett will wake up the next morning at 3 or 4am screaming. When I say ANY, I mean any. It's taught me to check labels 5 and 6 times so I can avoid that early morning wake-up call.

If he is stuffy, he will sleep fine (stuffy and all) until about 4am (see a pattern yet?) and then suddenly he will wake-up screaming because he's stuffy. Now to me, he doesn't sound any worse at 4am than he did when we went to bed at 10pm. But for some reason he seems unwilling to deal with it anymore after 4am.

And then, there was last night. Mr. Emmett John wasn't feeling good all day yesterday. However, when he was asleep is when he seemed the calmest and things were going pretty well for him. When he was awake, he was fussy and grumpy. You could just tell he was uncomfortable. So I figured when we went to bed for the night that he would sleep fairly well. Wrong. We went to bed at about 11pm. He was exhausted but wouldn't sleep. (I should have known then something was hinky.) At about 12:30am he finally fell asleep on my shoulder so we went to bed. He woke up fussing and then all out screaming by 3am. So he and I went downstairs so that Daddy and Elliott Richard could keep sleeping. He screamed and thrashed and thrashed and screamed until about 4:30-ish. At that point, I gave him some gas drops and Tylenol because I had exhausted all other options. Those helped him to calm down enough to fall asleep for brief period of time so long as he was on my chest. So I built a little fortress around us on the couch and dozed off and on while he slept for the briefest of periods. For the rest of the night, he would sleep for a bit. Wake up screaming. Nurse for a moment. Sleep for a bit. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Now it is 9:30am. I hope you'll excuse me if this post makes little to no sense; I am so beyond exhausted that I can't even see exhausted anymore. And now I'm off to try and accomplish something...maybe I'll wash some dishes. The laundry might be easier though. Or maybe I'll just pass out on the couch. Yeah, that's sounds like a better option.

Blech

I feel...unsettled. Like I want to blog but don't know what to say. I want to draw but don't know what to draw. You get the idea. I've been working on the whole Ancestry.com thing but I've hit a wall. My sister, Trisha, and I have been working to try and untangle our family tree without a whole lot of success. It's almost as if her maternal great-grandparents didn't exist. (I say her's and not our's because genetically they are our's, however, I wasn't raised with any emotional connection to them so to me they feel more like her's.) I can't even find evidence that her maternal grandmother's maiden name existed, ever. It's crazy. It's been nice working together with her on this project though. Plus I've been able to harass and stalk her (I use those terms affectionately of course.) while we work on it. After all, what good is a little sister if she isn't being annoying? (lol)

The Mob

8:51:00 AM Posted In , , , , , Edit This 4 Comments »

No. No. No. Not that mob. I'm referring to the lynch mob that hunted me down at Gavin's school yesterday. Apparently, I've been missed. And I promised a post. So here it is. Please remember I promised a post. Not an award winning novel. What can I say, I'm exhausted!

So here's the run down:

  • Emmett John now weighes 18lb 8oz.
  • He is 27.5 in long, which means he grew .75 inch in a month!
  • Gavin is holding steady with some pretty major meltdowns. He even threatened Rob one day and Elliott Richard the other. Not cool.
  • I have blown out my right knee, which wasn't difficult since I blew it out 15 years ago in gymnastics. I keep debating calling the doctor.
  • Elliott Richard is just as cute and sweet as ever. No real change there.
  • Emmett John saw the ENT doctor. He scoped Emmett's throat and determined that the hoarsness is from the reflux. The scope seems to have flipped a switch in Mr. Emmett John though because he hasn't shut up since the appointment. lol (As I write this, he is in his swing talk and squealing his head off.)
  • We've all been sick, except for Gavin, for the last month. We just keep passing it around. Right now is Rob's turn.
  • In an attempt to work through my identity crisis I have been living on Ancestry.com. Rob even got me a one month subscription for Christmas so I can continue my work. I've tracked some of my ancestors back to the 1500's! Pretty cool. Very satisfying. Very addicting.
  • And to wrap up my quick update in an attempt to hold off the mob, we got a dog. Yes, I know. This makes me certifiably insane. However, in my defense, we rescued a 2 year old dog. She's housebroken, knows most of the basic commands, is great with the kids and in my oppinion, absolutely adorable. Her name is Abby after my favorite character on NCIS. (Yes, I'm an NCIS nerd.)

And now my M&M's are calling/screaming for me. As are my dishes. So I am off.

13 Things I Miss Most Since Going Dairy Free

Thirteen Things I Miss Most Since Going Dairy Free

1.... Cheese! I love cheese. I love cheese on foods, with foods or alone. I miss Farmer's cheese, Extra Sharp Cheddar cheese, Brie...you get the idea.

2.... Cheesecake! This may sound very similar to #1 but in fact it is very different and deserving of it's own spot. I love me some cheesecake! If you dare to doubt my love for cheesecake...well, shame on you!

3.... Sour cream! I put sour cream on almost as many foods as I pair cheese with. Tacos. French fries. Baked potatoes. I have been known to revolve my menu around what I can make to put sour cream on.

4.... Ice cream! Now the rice milk ice cream is nice. It's actually very good. However, there are only a few flavors. I miss mint chocolate chip and peanut butter-chocolate, just to name a few.

5.... Milk shakes! Again very similar to #4 but totally different and worthy of it's only slot. Sheetz has these frozen milk shake things that you put in their little mixer machine thing. You can decide between "thick" and "extra thick". I love them! They are the best milk shakes around and I miss them.

6.... Cake! I would about kill for a huge piece of ooey gooey chocolate cake with super thick chocolate icing right now. I'm just saying.

7.... Cookies! It is now officially Christmas Season and there will be Christmas cookies every where. I will not be partaking in any of them. :(

8.... Doughnuts! Rob offered to go get doughnuts for breakfast the other day. I was thrilled until I remembered I couldn't have them. We had eggs instead...so not the same.

9.... McDonald's French Fries! Did you know that they treat these delectable little snacks with some sort of milk derivative? Yup. In fact, most of McDonald's foods are treated with this same (or similar) product making my absolutely favorite fast food place a no go. :(

10.... Not having to read every label I come across. Okay, so this isn't a food that I miss but it is something I miss most since going dairy free. So in my book, it counts. Plus it's my blog and I'll list what I want to! :p (lol)

11.... Brownies! Ooey gooey double chocolate brownies....mmmmmmm...

12.... Pizza! It kills me to watch everyone else eating pizza. Probably more than anything else simply because no one likes cheesecake around here except me. Oh how I miss pizza.

13.... Cheesecake! Hey, it's my list and I'll list it twice if I want to!

Block Castles in the Sky

4:11:00 PM Posted In , Edit This 1 Comment »
Come on down Elliott Richard! :)
Things in the land of Elliott Richard have been pretty calm, cool and collected.

We're still working on the potty training, while trying not to push too hard. Not an easy task. He tells us when he's wet. He adamantly denies when his pooped, although it feels like a game. He still loves his Big Boy Lightning McQueen pants (Pull Ups) but unlike most potty training kids he doesn't care if he uses them. Some nights he stays dry. Some nights he pees through his diaper. I'm starting to realize just how helpful day care was in potty training Gavin. {Even with Pam trying to undo it all. But that's for another post. I'm saying that a lot lately, aren't I?} Now I feel at a loss for what to do without the day care to help.

We've recently reinstated nap time for Mr. Elliott Richard. He wasn't taking naps for the largest time because it had become such a battle to get him to sleep. Plus, he was doing okay without them. He seems to be going through a growth spurt at the moment though because he's a major grump without a nap. Half the time he was falling asleep in the middle of whatever he was doing by 5pm anyway. All that accomplish was to seriously screw up bed time, which as any parent will tell you is very uncool. So Rob and I have reinstated nap time. The best part is the fact that to accomplish nap time, Emmett John and I have to lay down with him. So we get a nap too. {woo who!} I love nap time.

That's about the extent of the life and times of Elliott Richard. Oh and of course the facts that he got another hair cut and he's going through a growth spurt, which amounts to him eating anything that isn't nailed down. It's rather unsettling to watch him go from eating like a bird to eating like a horse virtually over night. It's kind of nice though because watching him eat like a bird is unsettling in its own right. I'll be sure to post pictures of his new 'do later.

Tales of Strings and Things

6:10:00 PM Edit This 0 Comments »
I know y'all are dying to know the news on the Gavin front. I apologize for not posting this sooner. It's been a crazy week and I have been beyond exhausted.

Dr. H's office called me bright and early on Tuesday (last Tuesday the 18th - Yes, I've keen working on this post for that long. lol). Gavin's x-rays were clean and clear. They didn't show any lumps, masses or balls of string in his stomach. At least none that were showing on the x-rays, which is awesome. Dr. H said that he's not really concerned with it being a serious health issue, as far as it being a threat to his life and well-being. So for now he wants us to keep an eye on him. If Gavin develops projectile vomiting, a severe stomach ache or develops issues going to the bathroom we are to call him ASAP because those are signs and symptoms of a bowel obstruction. So far we are doing well. He's still eating his blanket, which isn't what we would like in a perfect world, but for now it is what it is. At least until we can figure it out and figure out how to stop it. So for now we will watch him and pray that it stays status quo.

Other than the Pica, things with Gavin have been...well, things with Gavin. A daily roller coaster ride that never stays the same from one moment to the next.

Monday I spent the day at school working with some of the other moms to prepare a Thanksgiving feast for the students. It was a huge success! And now Thanksgiving break has started. Making today Day 3 with Gavin home. In the grand scheme of things, in the land of living with Gavin, has it been the worst we've ever had? No, not by a long shot. It was just one more trying and exhausting day after another in a long line of trying and exhausting days. Complete with a very dramatic, loud and public meltdown at Patty's office. He kicked, screamed, punched and threw things. All of which probably sounded like we were trying to kill him to an outsider. Fun was had by all, can't you tell?

13 Things I am Thankful for this Year

5:00:00 AM Posted In , Edit This 5 Comments »

Thirteen Things I am Thankful for

1.... Rob, my darling husband. He is the love of my life. I can't imagine life without him.

2.... Gavin Alexander, my beautifully unique oldest. His Autism definitely makes life more complicated and difficult, however, I'm truly blessed to have him as my son. He has helped me become the mother I am today.

3.... Elliott Richard, my kind-hearted trouble-making middle baby. While every baby truly is a miracle, Elliott Richard is my first miracle baby after I was diagnosed as infertile. I am grateful for him each and every day.

4.... Emmett John, my snuggle bug baby.

5.... My pregnancy with Emmett John ended with a happy, healthy baby boy and absolutely no time spent in the NICU.

6.... Rob's adoption of Gavin finally went through - completeing our family and putting an end to 7 years of emotional warfare.

7.... Everyone managed, by the grace of God, to survive the last 7 years of legal Hell and emotional warfare.

8.... Rob is so understanding of my health and physical limitations.

9.... My friends and family. Each and every one of you who has been there, loved and supported us during our struggles. First, while we fought to protect Gavin. Now while we struggle to find our footing again. You've never judged or attacked, only shown us unconditional love and support to the best of your abilities. I will be forever grateful for all of you.

10.... All of your (my faithful blog readers) positive thoughts and prayers over the past year.

11.... Laughter. I may not laugh as much as I like lately but I'm grateful for the times I do get to laugh.

12.... Dr D. and his amazing nursing staff and all their medical expertise for making #3, 4, and 5 possible. Rob and I firmly believe that without these wonderful people Elliott Richard, Emmett John and myself would not be here today.

13.... And my completely shallow thing that I am thankful for, my cell phone. While it's the polar opposite of girlie and what I want, it is exactly what I need and I couldn't get along without it. (Thank you to my darling husband for forcing me to use it. Somehow you always know...which is really irritating sometimes. ;) lol)

Not Me Monday

5:00:00 AM Posted In , Edit This 1 Comment »
This week I definitely did not....
I did not.... realize that while I had only been cheating on my milk-free diet in the smallest, ney tinyest of ways that was more than enough to cause the 4:00 am wake up calls I've been getting from Mr. Emmett John. That would make me a mean mommy who had caused her baby's pain in a moment of weakness.
I did not.... find Gavin jumping {like ceiling brushing jumping} on his bed at 5:00 am one morning. Since he's 8 years old {chronologically anyway, mentally he's more like 3 years old} he has obviously already learned that bed jumping is a bad idea.
I did not.... then scream "Gavin Alexander what on Earth are you doing?!" scaring the pants off of him in mid-jump. Doing so would have increased both the danger and odds of him injuring himself, which we luckily managed to avoid.
I did not.... begin insisting that Elliott Richard take naps {which is often a battle to accomplish} so that Emmett John and I could nap with him. That would be selfish and self-centered and a desperate act of an exhausted mother of 3.
I did not.... secretly get excited that the paperwork for Emmett John's ENT doctor had come in the mail because I seriously love to fill out paperwork. Because that would be sad and probably even bump up my ranking as a nerd. {It goes back to the whole love of writing problem I have.}
I did not.... use a website to rate the reading level of my blog.
I also did not.... then have my feelings hurt when I learned that my blog is painfully simple and low on the reading level scale.
And last but certainly not least, I did not.... spend more time marveling at my M&M's (Mini Miracles) than doing housework this week.

Our Funkalicious Saturday‏

I hate winter. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful and is home to some of my favorite holidays. However, it's also incredibly cold, which is not a good climate for those of us with fibromyalgia. Plus as beautiful as the snow and icicles are, they are Hell on the roads. Especially when there is currently a salt shortage which leads our "fearless leader" Governor Strickland to issue a statement saying that Ohioians simply need to learn to drive in the snow. {Jerk.} For his information, most of us know how to drive in the snow because we've lived here our entire lives. It's merely a matter of a little thing called "Public Safety" that we prefer to have the roads plowed and salted down. Silly Ohioians, wanting safe roads. {Pfth.} Looks like those of us without 4x4 vehicles are S.O.L. (Sorry Out of Luck) {That includes us, by the way.}

Anywho, back to the temperature and it's reeking havoc on my body. I am hurting. Big time. I slept horribly last night for two reasons. First, I was having some seriously bizarre dreams. The kind of dreams where you wake up, say "what the..." and then go back to sleep only to pick-up right where you left off. {I hate that.} Second, I kept waking up in excruciating pain. It was next to impossible to find a comfortable position and believe me when I say I tried. Lucky for me, I have about the best husband in the world. When Elliott Richard woke up at 4:00am but Emmett John didn't, Rob got up with Elliott Richard and left us to sleep in! {Woo who!} Granted, I'm not sure that 7:30am classifies as "sleeping in" but I'll take what I can get at this point. {lol} I had hoped the extra sleep would help to ease the pain. Unfortunately, it didn't. I still woke up in excruciating pain and with a migraine to top it off. Even after taking two extra strength Tylenol and a 3 hour nap with Elliott Richard and Emmett John; I still feel as if someone beat me with a baseball bat while I slept. Needless to say, I'm a tad grumpy today.

Today is my little sister, Jenn's 18th birthday. {Okay, technically she's Rob's little sister and my little sister-in-law. We choose not to use the in-law part though.} We are heading over to Mom and Dad G's for a birthday dinner to celebrate. First, we have to go shopping though. While I can't partake in the dinner {We are bringing Emmett John approved food from Burger King for me. Yum.} I'm still really looking forward to hanging out with the whole family. I just love these family dinners. {Although between you and me blogosphere, I wish people weren't freaked out by my nursing Emmett John. But that's another post, for another time.}

Well, we're off to party. Emmett John has been fed. And I hear a family debate brewing. :) I'll be back later with updates on the family.

{Ever notice how when you start a blog, get a rhythm going and then have to stop you can't quite get that groove back later? I hate that.}

I needed some pajamas to wear. Daddy offered his pajama pants and t-shirt. What wife can refuse her hubby's comfiest clothes? (lol) So I am wearing Daddy's comfy pajama pants and t-shirt. Elliott Richard is less than pleased with this arrangement.

Elliott Richard: Mommy, dose are Daddy's pants!

Mommy: Yes, they are.

ER: Take dem off!

M: Daddy said I could wear them.

ER: No! Take dem OFF!

M: Daddy, can I wear your pants?

Daddy: Yes, Mommy.

ER: Daddy, you wear Mommy's pants too?

Daddy has an XBox 360. On his 360 he has what Microsoft calls "Arcade Games", which are games that you can purchase on the XBox Live network and download. Elliott Richard is obsessed with one called "Marble Blast" where you control a marble and have to navigate through these courses. Unfortunately, Daddy was working on the computer. This is the conversation that followed:

Elliott Richard: I play Marble Bast?

Daddy: After Daddy is finished working.

ER: I know! I play Marble Bast. *points right index finger to the sky* Perfect idea!

It's Wednesday, the week is officially half over. So let's do a quickie...a quick loose-end wrap up that is. ;) lol

I can't wait for the weekend to get here. I love Friday to Monday because we don't have any appointments. Then between Tuesday to Thursday we are hammered! So I live for the weekends. (lol) Next week is Thanksgiving break at school. They only have school on Monday, which I will spend at school helping to cook Thanksgiving dinner for the students for lunch. So it's likely going to be a long week next week.

I'm thrilled to inform you that the Twins are both officially healthy again! I spent Monday morning scrubbing our Mudroom and making it fit for a sick kitty. So Cosmo had his own apartment for a while complete with room service! (lol) I got his pad all decked out for him and then Gavin and I stopped by the local chinese restaurant on our way home from school to pick up a pint of plain white rice. Once he ate that he seemed to make a complete turn around. Now all three of our kitties are back in the general population of the family. :) The added bonus being the complete lack of poo dribbles all over my house. :) (Woo who!)

The bane of our neighborhood existence is now GONE! (Double woo who!) There was a house the was once a part of our neighbor's Ron and Herman's house. Then when the city made our street wider they made the owners at the time remove a wing and relocate it. Well, it stood literally 6 feet from our garage. The people who used to live there...well, it was bad. They abused their dogs, which led to many calls to the dog warden and Humane Society from me. They abused each other. (One of our first nights here we had to call the cops because one of the daughters was fighting with her baby-daddy and he was brandishing a gun!) It was just a nasty situation. They were foreclosed on a few years ago. Then an attorney bought the house and left it empty. Well, transients were sleeping in it and it then someone has been setting empty houses fires lately, so we finally got the city to agree to destroy it. Yesterday while Gavin, Emmett John, Grandma G and I were with Dr. H the city finally came in and started the demo. They are wrapping up today, which is awesome! If someone had set fire to the house it was so close to ours that we wouldn't have stood a chance. It's kind of freaky though because they are breaking up the foundation and a concrete slab on the back of the lot next door so our house keeps shaking. It feels like they are nudging our house with the construction equipment. Rob took some video for me so I'll have to pick one and post it later. :)

I thought I had more to update on but I can't remember anymore right now. I still haven't heard from Dr. H's office but I will be sure to update when I do. I think I'm going to go lay down now...Mr. Emmett John got sick this morning and I'm feeling pretty nauseous myself. Ick.

ROTFLMAO
